Blogger Nathaniel has a nice piece about appreciating the art of suspense: “When I was young I read a whole bunch of books by an author named John Bellairs and they really had the power to freak me out. Now these books were marketed for what I’d call an adolescent audience and so I am not sure that they would creep me out in the same when any more, but I remember that when I was ten or twelve and reading them I was thinking, ‘man this is some pretty scary stuff.’”

We’re not the comic book experts – our old friend Jon Caulkett is more into that realm – but this caught our eye: there was a 1952 Wonder Woman story entitled “The Chessmen of Doom!” It appears to have been rewritten as “The Chessmen of Death!” in the 1970s but still...(bottom of page). Presumably no relation....

If you enjoy the animated artwork of Edward Gorey as seen during the PBS program, "Mystery!," then be warned: Mystery! (and Masterpiece Theatre for that matter) are undergoing fundamental changes. For starters, it’s now called “Masterpiece Mystery!”; however “in redesigning their introductions, ‘Mystery!’ will include some references to Edward Gorey’s whimsical animations of the old introduction.” Hooray!
