I seem to recall wood siding, perhaps redwood shingles? It wasn't an antique home or anything, just an eccentric house from the 60s.Jeanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14247515387599954817noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12570492.post-55727410529733001082023-12-18T18:08:04.894-06:002023-12-18T18:08:04.894-06:00I doubt that anyone had actually read the book and...I doubt that anyone had actually read the book and seen the movie would say the movie was a faithful adaptation of the book. There were a number of things changed or added to the movie, not to be found in the book. In some ways the characters were even changed so they were not the characters from the book. To me it seemed that the movie script writer wrote his own story and only returned to the book when his plot became too muddled to continue. John Bellairs did get credit for writing the original story, I do not think he would want credit for the movie script. I have seen some movies taken from books that either ignore the original author or gave him or her a small credit in the closing lines of credits. But then the author might not have wanted the movie associated with their name anyway. Was just one side of the signature incorrect, or were all of the pages out of place? I have seen misprints before that had one side incorrect. In that case a sheet printed on one side is put back into the press when the wrong back pages are being printed. This is not an uncommon error in the printing world. I have had books with the entire back side of a signature printed blank. I say printed because you could see the impression of the type, but no ink. I have had books with two of the same signature and one different signature missing. These books are fairly uncommon because they are usually scrapped or thrown away when found.Russhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16062917650738143397noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12570492.post-78762389623126671032023-11-09T15:40:22.596-06:002023-11-09T15:40:22.596-06:00I think I read somewhere that Stonehenge is also r...I think I read somewhere that Stonehenge is also referred to as Giants’ DanceAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12570492.post-39847375865647030362023-10-15T10:52:50.191-05:002023-10-15T10:52:50.191-05:00This was the very first book I read. I was in the ...This was the very first book I read. I was in the 5th grade. It was early spring time and we went to the library to choose a book to read. I know it was the 5th grade because I know it was 1980, I know that because The Miracle On Ice just happened. That winter in Weymouth, Mass was a good one. We got a lot of snow and it was the first time my parents let me walk to and from my best friends house who lived in another neighborhood. Those walks home under streetlights in the snow covered streets and high snow banks could get scary because when it was snowing or just cloudy, it was very dark.
I saw this books cover and I fell in love with it. The snow and the robed figure in the dark beyond what looked like a street lamp brought back memories of that wonderful winter. Yes, I did say memories. Time moved different back then. Each season was an adventure of learning new things.
I checked out this book and things were never the same. It was the start of my love for reading. I read The Figure In The Shadows and was thrilled to find out there was a first book. I then read The House With A Clock In Its Walls. Loved that too.
My parents were thrilled I was reading. My older brothers would sit in front of the TV all day and it was an annoyance to my Dad. They bought me all 3 books of that series. I did like The Letter, The Witch and The Ring but Lewis was not in it. I should read it again because I don't remember it at all. The other ones Ive read several times as a kid.

Thank you for having this dedication website to Mr. Bellairs. He truly deserves to be remembered.

Matt TinlinMatthew Tinlinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04719876734486513690noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12570492.post-50420141291865051672023-08-10T07:56:06.344-05:002023-08-10T07:56:06.344-05:00Ordered two copies yesterday! Thus Gravely Speaking:

When the enigmatic blue onyx-colored sphinx was installed at the Spring Grove Cemetery at Cincinnati in 1850, it caused a great stir. The “pagan” iconography of the Egyptian sphinx ruffled the Christian sensibilities of the Victorians; yet, there were those who praised the monument as a break in the monotony of the usual gravestone shapes of neoclassical columns, mourning figures, flowered-adorned markers, obelisks, and Gothic pinnacles.

The Lawler sphinx was an inspiration to the related Peaslee Family of Louisville, Kentucky. They were so taken with the monument in the Spring Grove Cemetery that they commissioned a look-alike sphinx for the Cave Hill Cemetery at Louisville.

https://gravelyspeaking.com/2013/09/08/the-sphinx/Broteus Mitchellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09994377915394472881noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12570492.post-24044210148315001882022-09-02T15:14:45.086-05:002022-09-02T15:14:45.086-05:00Pine Apple, Alabama?Pine Apple, Alabama?bellairsiahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06920679947816998222noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12570492.post-75529062177524859042022-08-25T13:06:35.926-05:002022-08-25T13:06:35.926-05:00I have not been able to find anywhere to rent a pi...I have not been able to find anywhere to rent a pineapple around here. I'm still reading and re-reading his books and I must confess that I always will. There is a comfort about reading an author whom one loves. His characters and their situations, no matter how alarming, scary, and seriously life threatening! they are, I know that the smart kid will get out of it safe and sound. Putting a smart, young main character at the center of these stories is to, actually, give armloads of respect to young people, to tell everyone aloud that one has faith in our future generations. I believe John Bellairs felt that way and I know that I do, too. So, upwards and onwards, reading all of John Bellairs books and remembering his characters, what matters to them, what faces them in their seemingly peaceful lives (no less than meetups with evil magicians who want to take over the world!),and no matter how scared they are, these kids, Johnny Dixon, Louis Barnavelt and Tony Monday, and all their friends as well, are heroes who take on life and death matters which few adults would ever do or even have an idea of how to deal with it all. Thank you, John Bellairs!
CeruleanBlondehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02815283928802172674noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12570492.post-81300790081954875562022-07-23T19:33:40.206-05:002022-07-23T19:33:40.206-05:00My John Bellairs Paperback collection also contain...My John Bellairs Paperback collection also contains a 1st paperback edition of "The Face in the Frost". So technically to be complete, I guess I should also have a First Paperback Edition of "The Pedant and the Shuffly" done by Mythopoeic Press in 2001. I just could not pay the price being asked for a reasonably nice copy of that book. And I also reasoned, it was sort of out of the scope of my collection because it was published so late. The hardcover original was published in 1968. If I could find a reasonably priced copy, I might add it to the collection, just for completeness. But I did not feel a need to add it to the collection. I reasoned that a book published 10 years after the author's death and 33 years after the First Edition is not the same as the First Paperback editions included in my collection, although I guess technically it is a First Paperback Edition. I consider it just a reissue of an older title, that happens to be in a paperback binding. And of course the three titles that came after The Tower at the End of the World", as has been pointed out, did not have American Paperback editions (except Proofs). In resent times there have been U.K. paperback editions, which I considered, but again they were not books that I felt were needed in the collection. But if you decide to build a paperback set, you can set your own rules and boundaries. I hope my descriptions will help guide other collectors who wish to build a set.
