About The Legion of Decency

We've noted over the years that the Bellairsia email inbox garners some interesting comments and questions. Enough time has probably passed to share this unexciting anecdote we received a few months ago - not because there was any sort of security issue but because we managed to lose it amidst everything else. It also proved to of us people were actually visiting the site – and not primarily always as Bellairs fans.

Here's what happened: someone from Turner Classic Movies "stumbled across" Bellairsia while searching for information on the Legion of Decency:

I was wondering if you might have any archival footage of this organization or might provide me with the contact information for Charles Bowen or Alfred Myers, who discuss this organization on your website. We’d really like to find something to include in our section on Stanley Kubrick's Lolita, which was initially banned by the Legion of Decency. Any help you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated. Proper credit and compensation would naturally be provided.

As much as we wanted to help (and bask in all that credit and compensation jazz), neither us - nor Al or Charlie - had much to offer that wasn't already said. Which, ultimately was okay since it turns out they had gotten the Legion of Decency confused with the Hayes Code.

We told you it was an unexciting anecdote.
