I’m annoyed by the illustrations, which are, at best, crummy approximations of the style of the late, great Edward Gorey, and, at worst, direct swipes. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with paying tribute to the man, and the game mechanics certainly seem to do that, but after searching designer Keith Baker’s website, I can’t find any reference to Gorey whatsoever. Not even an ‘Inspired by the work of’ credit.

Something About the Game of Gloom
In the game of Gloom you assume control of the fate of an eccentric family of misfits and misanthropes. The goal of the game is sad, but simple: you want your characters to suffer the greatest tragedies possible before passing on to the well-deserved respite of death. Blogger Graham Linehan points out the delightful obvious similarities between the game (not kin to another game by id software) and the artwork of Edward Gorey:
