Who's Who: John Cameron Swayze

While pressed to come up with a nun-sounding name in order to gain access into Nyarlat-Hotep’s domain, Fergie blurts out, "And I am Sister Francine Hildegarde Ursula John Cameron Swayze [The Wrath of the Grinning Ghost; 141]."

John Cameron Swayze (1906-1995) was a popular United State news commentator and game show panelist during the 1950s. Swayze was hired by NBC as the voice of the Camel Newsreel Theatre, an early television news program that broadcast Movietone News newsreels, and the host of Who Said That?, a popular radio quiz program. On February 14, 1949, Swayze became host for NBC's first television newscast, the fifteen-minute Camel News Caravan. The program, sponsored by the Camel cigarette brand, is remembered for Swayze’s catch-phrase, “"Let's go hop scotching around the world for headlines.” After leaving Caravan in 1956, Swayze became known as the spokesman for Timex watches for over two decades, coining the memorable slogan “It takes a licking and keeps on ticking."
