RecordedBooks: Lewis Barnavelt and Voices I Desire Aloud

In 1995 The House with a Clock in its Walls – as well as four other titles – was released in audiobook format by Recorded Books, LLC. The unabridged novel was read across either three audio cassettes or four compact discs for upwards of four-and-a-half hours of listening excitement. Telling the story is acclaimed award-winning narrator and actor George Guidall who has has recorded over 900 unabridged novels that have favorably earned reviews from Audiofile, Library Journal, Publisher's Weekly, and a variety of national newspapers and magazines.

I thought someone might find this of interest. Our library is starting to get rid of our audiobook on cassette collection. It seems our audiobooks on CD are rendering them obsolete. Our children's librarian was helping a 10-year-old child the other day find Harry Potter books on audio, and when she was informed all we had left on the shelves were cassette versions, the girl replied, "What's a cassette?"

More Books on Tape

We recently came across an old newsletter, the Talking Book Topics from January-February 1999, highlighting the then-recent books that were read to cassette and/or CD for the blind and physically handicapped. We were surprised to see three books of John's were listed in the mix:

• The Doom of the Haunted Opera, read by Erik Sandvold. 
• The Drum, the Doll, and the Zombie, read by Erik Sandvold 
• The Secret of the Underground Room, read by Christopher Hurt.

We would appreciate hearing more about these editions, if more is to be told (or heard).
