What Robert Bloch owes to H. P. Lovecraft

In a 1983 interview with Randy and Jean-Marc Lofficier, author Robert Bloch described how much as a teenager he enjoyed the magazine Weird Tales and how frustrated he was at not being able to find stories by his favorite writer, H. P. Lovecraft, from past issues. So he wrote to Lovecraft, as told by the Reader's Almanac blog:

The August Derleth Centenary

The Sauk Prairie (Wisconsin) Eagle reports that on February 2, Governor Jim Doyle signed a proclamation declaring February 24 August Derleth Day in honor of what would've been the prolific author's 100th birthday."We approached the Governor and asked if we could have this declared and he said absolutely," said Kay Price, Executive Secretary of the August Derleth Society. "It's quite an honor."

Just as those quirky Bellairsians have their Bellairs Walk in Marshall, so too do they celebrate Lovecraft’s hometown of Providence, Rhode Island.  "A hand-sketched survey of key areas that were important to both H.P. Lovecraft and his stories” was announced recently.

Happy New Year 2008

Here’s a little something we picked up today off the wire: Public Domain Day, the day when a whole year’s worth of copyrights enter the public domain. In countries using the “life plus 70 years” term, works by authors who died in 1937 enter the public domain, including another familiar face, H. P. Lovecraft

So I was cataloging a series of children’s books on the different states and just got through looking at the one on Rhode Island. Knowing H.P. Lovecraft was a native of the state, I thought to look for mention of him.
