Banned Books Week 2022

Banned Books Week is an annual awareness campaign promoted by the American Library Association and Amnesty International celebrating the freedom to read.  Prominent First Amendment and library activist Judith Krug founded the event 1982.  The late Ann LaPietra (1933-2007) - owner and operator of the kids' place book store in Marshall, Michigan, and the creator of the John Bellairs Walk - was also a supporter of First Amendment rights and was known to create visual displays within her bookstore in support of Banned Books Week.

The 2022 celebration is September 18 to 24.

2013 Living History Portrayal Walk

For the thirteenth year in a row ... lucky number 13 ... Marshall, Michigan’s Oakridge Cemetery will conjure up the ghosts of so many years ago with the annual "If These Stones Could Talk..." tour. Visitors will learn about a handful of significant people from Marshall's past by actors portraying the deceased at their grave site. Small groups will be guided by hosts in a predetermined lantern-illuminated pattern through the cemetery and the once-prominent residents will rise up and share their stories.

2012 Living History Portrayal Walk

Marshall's Oakridge Cemetery was first used in 1839 and is one of the oldest continuously operated cemeteries in the state. For the twelfth year in a row Oakridge will be home to the "If These Stones Could Talk...", a walking tour where local actors and actresses portray significant people from Marshall's past at that person’s grave site. Small groups will be guided by hosts in a predetermined lantern-illuminated pattern through the cemetery and the once-prominent residents will rise up and share their stories.

This year’s event takes place Saturday, October 6 at 7pm come rain or shine. For more information, including ticket costs, please contact the Marshall Chamber of Commerce.

49th Annual Historic Home Tour

The 49th Annual Historic Home Tour of Marshall, Michigan will be offering exquisite private homes and businesses for public viewing and enjoyment. The tour will feature seven homes and will include seven historic museums covering diverse specialties such as unusual architecture, antique home furnishings, Civil War memorabilia, a restored antique post office, Michigan's largest collection of magic memorabilia as well as two art centers. To close out the tour's twenty structures will be one business from Marshall's well-maintained historic business district.

Marshall's tour has been called the Granddaddy of Midwest Home Tours and is famous all over the country for its traditions and heritage, and was voted the Best Home Tour by the readers of AAA's Michigan Living magazine

Marshall's Oakridge Cemetery, one of the oldest continuously operated cemeteries in Michigan, is home again this year to the 9th Annual "If These Stones Could Talk..."  This Living History Portrayal walking tour will feature actors portraying significant people from Marshall's past at his or her's gravesite.

Portrayals this year include Beatrice H. Babbitt (1870-1959), an eccentric, penny-pinching, heiress and world traveler; Winston Schuler (1908-1993), the second family owner of the 100-year-old Schuler’s Restaurant (dubbed the “Consummate Host”); plus a host of others.

This guided walking tour will feature actors portraying significant persons from Marshall's past at each of those individual's gravesites.

This year’s famous Marshallnites include Anne Ells (no relation Myra, that we know of), Samuel Burpee, Mary Coleman, Deville Hubbard, Calvin Clark, Rev. Christopher Heidenreich, and Adam Crosswhite. The event will take place rain or shine so participants are encouraged to bring flashlights, wear comfortable walking shoes, and carry an umbrella.

Celebrate Edward Gorey's Children's Books

Celebrate Edward Gorey's Children's Books with a visit to the Edward Gorey House and their exhibition of original works by Edward Gorey for his own children's books and illustrations he created for many other authors. The Edward Gorey House is pleased to announce the 2008 opening on Thursday, April 17th and running though December 21, 2008.

Our exhibit will show many of Gorey's original pen and ink, watercolor, and preliminary pencil illustrations for children's books of his own creation, and for other noted children's authors including Peter Neumeyer, Florence Parry Heide, Edward Lear, Hilaire Belloc, T. S. Eliot, and others. Special books such as Gorey's only pop-up book, The Dwindling Party and the three-dimensional accordian book The Tunnel Calamity are highlighted. A unique focus of the exhibit will be early drawings and illustrations by Gorey from his childhood years.

A Riveting Collection of Bridges

The Calhoun County Road Commission and the Parks Trustees Board will be holding its annual "Living History Demonstration" at the Historic Bridge Park on the Kalamazoo River in Emmett Township this coming Saturday. The event will include demonstrations of industrial building techniques such as forge welding and black-smithing.
