Book review: The House with a Clock in its Walls This reviewer of The House with a Clock in Its Walls calls it a classic because his ex-wife shares the same first name ("appropriately") with Selenna Izard.
Didn't see that one coming.
If you see a kid reading one of those uninspired, boring, cliched and condescending "Goosebumps" books, you should immediately rip it out of their hands and give them this one. The child will either (a) run screaming for the police (if it's a kid you don't know and you're at a playground), or (b), if they're a friend or family member, devour it and immediately run to the bookstore looking for more in the series. Written in the 1970's and featuring some nice illustrations by Edward Gorey, this spooky, supernatural tale was John Bellairs first book for children, and in my opinion, his best. It's a classic on many levels, not the least of which being the fact that the evil spirit antagonist, appropriately, shares the same first name as my ex-wife.
