The Chicago-native author and illustrator's works include such titles as The Doubtful Guest (1957), The Gashlycrumb Tinies (1963), The Glorious Nosebleed (1975), The Dwindling Party (1982), and The Headless Bust (1999).
In addition, he won a Tony Award for Best Costume Design for the 1977 Broadway revival of Dracula and contributed to the animated credits of the PBS series Mystery.
He also illustrated 21 books by John Bellairs and Brad Strickland in the Lewis Barnavelt, Johnny Dixon, and Anthony Monday series, starting with The House with a Clock in its Walls (1973) and concluding with The Beast under the Wizard's Bridge (2000). And then there were the tattoos.
He came 100 years ago and to this day, his legacy shows no signs of slowing away.
