March

  • 8 (Sunday) - The University of Notre Dame at Georgetown University (GU) for the College Bowl television program on the CBS television Network (4 PM CST), broadcast from McDonough Gymnasium on the GU campus (Washington, D.C.).  Final score was 205 (ND) to 90 (GU).
  • 10 (Tuesday) - The Notre Dame College Bowl team returns to Indiana and are met by a campus-wide pep rally:
    • "[W]hen Notre Dame's four-man quiz team returned to the campus after toppling Georgetown from a string of three victories on the program, 2,500 cheering students turned out with a band and corps of cheerleaders who leaped and back-flipped with all the abandon usually reversed for gridiron heroes. [1]"
  • 15 (Sunday) - Barnard College (BC) at the University of Notre Dame for the College Bowl television program on the CBS television Network (4 PM CST), broadcast from Washington Hall on the University of Notre Dame campus.  Final score was 225 (BC) to 110 (ND).
  • 20 - Bellairs's humorous story "Decline and Fall of the Main Building" appears in the Scholastic.

Spring

  • Bellairs is the recipient of the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship.

June

  • 7 - Bellairs graduates Magna cum Laude, A.B., University of Notre Dame [2][3].

September

  • Bellairs began graduate studies at the University of Chicago [2].
  • Bellairs lives in International House from September 1959 to May 1961, excluding the 1960 summer break.

November

  • 10 - Bellairs checks-out an anthology of Algernon Blackwood stories from the University of Chicago library.
