Review: Chessmen "Fast-paced, Exciting Story"

Book review: The Chessmen of Doom
Bellairs has written another exciting mystery starring Johnny Dixon and Professor Childermass. When his brother Peregrine dies, Professor Childermass receives a strange riddle in the terms of his brother's will. The will states that the professor must spend the summer at Peregrine's estate or forfeit the inheritance. Knowing that his brother dabbled in sorcery, Professor Childermass invites Johnny and Johnny's friend Fergie to join him in solving the riddle. Arriving at the mansion, the Professor and boys immediately begin to discover odd things taking place. Unusual symbols, missing chessmen, a strange man with stranger powers, and comets flashing through the sky provide the reader with a fast-paced, exciting story. It makes an excellent read-aloud story.
