Something About Chocolate-chip Ice Cream

We all scream.

I found a copy of John Bellairs's autobiographical sketch from the Fifth Book of Junior Authors (1983) where he said he was "crazy about" (among other things) chocolate-chip ice cream. Ah! An idea! There's a birthday happening tomorrow here at Bellairsia and I thought I'd whip up something for those still going into the office. Besides cake.

Here's a little something from Serving Ice Cream to tide you over.  If you're truly envious then you can add mint flavoring and green food coloring and celebrate National Chocolate Mint Day, too. Knock yourself out.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips (or 4 oz chopped semi-sweet chocolate)
Instructions
  1. Mix milk and sugar with a wire whisk or hand mixer (low speed for 1-2 minutes) in a medium bowl until sugar dissolves.
  2. Gently stir in heavy cream and vanilla.
  3. Pour mixture into your ice cream maker. Mix about 20-25 minutes or according to manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Add chocolate to ice cream mixture.
  5. Churn for an additional 5 minutes.
