Something About Leitmotifs

This note’s for you!

A leitmotif is short, constantly recurring musical phrase associated with a particular person, place, or idea. (Recall hearing "The Imperial March" every time you saw Darth Vader.) By association, the word has also been used to mean any sort of recurring theme, (whether or not subject to developmental transformation) in literature (also, do not confuse with reichsmotif).

Matthew Richardson has stirred the conversation pot for years at the CompleatBellairs and Bellairsia, asking out-of-the-ordinary questions to get fans thinking. As such, here’s one from the archives:
Aside from creaky-door gothic as a whole, what would you say are Bellairs's most often recurring elements, images, emotional concerns (or leitmotifs or themes)? He often wrote about the insecurities of childhood and early adolescence, how friendship and humor help us through the horrific, and how (naturally and supernaturally) life can be overwhelming, terrifying, but something that we must confront if we're to grow, survive, and thrive.
Thoughts?
